And is not for less. The price of this luxury good has shot up 40% in 2018 and the increase in the last decade amounts to 582%, according to The Wealth Report 2019, by the consulting firm Knight Frank. Its revaluation is well above that registered by cars (+ 258%), coins (193%), stamps (189%) and art (158%), among other items desired by the upper classes.

But let's go in parts. What is rare whiskey? You may wonder. Old whiskey is rare, with a barrel maturation of 25 years or more; but also that matured in distillery barrels that are already closed, although even the rarity depends on the type of maturation and the barrels available. In short, it is the one for which there is more demand than supply, as explained by Durán Subastas to Crónica Global.
"Every investment has its risk"

David Durán clarifies that “every investment has its risk”, and adds that this distillate is more fashionable than wine, although “it depends on wine and whiskey”. In fact, the Knight Frank report lists 100 bottles of rare whiskeys and points out that 21 of them lost value in 2018. This alcoholic liquor “is the third most popular alternative investment in a period of stock market uncertainty, behind cars. collection and works of art ”, adds Scotch whiskey expert Charles MacLean.

On the other side of the scale are two best sellers from last year. In October, at an auction, a buyer from the Far East paid $ 1.1 million for a Macallan distilled in 1926 and bottled 60 years later. With designer label (there are only 12 like her). But in November, an investor paid 1.5 million for another Macallan distilled in 1926 and bottled in 1986 in a unique hand-painted bottle.

Macallan

Macallan distilled in 1926 and bottled in 1986 in a unique hand-painted bottle, sold for $ 1.5M / CHRISTIE'S
No tradition in Spain

David Durán explains that these sales "can make pieces appear that were not on the market." And so he tries to justify large outlays for a bottle of whiskey: a culture has been created around this distillate, there is a training and investors understand the production process. "They know how to appreciate it" and it is easier to preserve than wine, adds his brother, Alberto Durán. In addition, it is a masculine luxury: 95% of the jewelry market corresponds to feminine pieces.

Alberto Durán argues that "the good is increasingly scarce", since there is a polarization between "low cost and quality". This pushes investors to pay large sums for a luxury good like rare whiskey: "There are people who open bottles of 30,000, 40,000, 50,000 euros." Others wait for a better time to put them back on the market. In Spain there is no tradition - this medium has contacted two other firms that have not provided more information because they do not work with this product -; the bottles that arrive at auction houses do so as part of a set of different things.
The oriental market and whiskey

But who pays? "The biggest trend is the eastern market," the Durán brothers agree. In Asia "there is a very young consumer in terms of income availability". Data from the Scotch Whiskey Association reinforces this idea: Scotch whiskey exports to India, China and Singapore soared 44%, 35% and 24%, respectively, in the first six months of 2018.

Hibiki

Hibiki Aritayaki Ceramic, matured for 35 years, in hand-painted Arita bottle

Here are ten of the rarest whiskeys sold at auction, a compilation from Catawiki:

Limited edition of Hibiki Aritayaki Ceramic, matured for 35 years, in a hand-painted Arita bottle: 9,370 euros. And it was also an unexpected and spectacular launch campaign for a motorcycle called to make history, the Impala.

t was a great challenge promoted by Regàs who were joined by Marsans, Elizalde and Vernis, expert competition riders and a chronicler who did not know how to ride a motorcycle, Maristany. Accompanied by a Land Rover that the expeditionaries called Kiboko (rhino in Swahili), three Montesa prototypes of 175 cc and 10.5 HP of power that even had mechanical differences between them such as the clutch system, were able despite their apparent fragility of overcoming mud , jungle, deserts and savannahs reaching their goal.

The documentary is already available in the TV3 video library, Televisió de Catalunya, and is a must-see for motorcycle fans. And I also recommend reading the book, a delicious succession of anecdotes in which Maristany reflected the society and way of life of post-colonial Africa that no longer resembles anything, for better or for worse, to what we know today.

When their idea was launched, the travelers intended to carry out a daring adventure among a group of good friends, without more. However, the expedition took place shortly after an event that still raises blisters fifty-four years later, the professional break between Pere Permanyer and Paco Bultó. They were the men in command of Montesa, passionate about motors and motorcycles, but those who knew them say, very different from each other and both with a strong personality.

Bultó always defended competition as the most outstanding value of a brand: "The market always goes after the checkered flag," Montesa said and left in 1958 to create his own brand, Bultaco, due to Permanyer's refusal to maintain presence and investment in the races. And that was the beginning of a huge sports, industrial and commercial rivalry that lasted over 25 years.

That personality, that character so different and so marked between the leaders and their collaborators and also their motorcycles, created filia and phobias, hatreds and passions and also of a series of enmities and disagreements that remain practically intact.

Followers and lovers of Bultaco cannot be forced to climb a Montesa or at gunpoint. Conversely, when a follower of Montesa is named Bultaco, the subject in question cannot avoid suffering all kinds of itching. It's kind of amazing and what I thought about after watching the movie.

As in everything, there are fair people who recognize merits of one and the other, but as it happens in soccer or in politics, opinion and feelings are polarized and each one does not ignore as much as the merits of the other party what they do not it ceases to be a symbol of the schizophrenic society in which we live.

And the trip of the five bikers to Africa is partly to blame. Its impact was so great and unexpected, that a motorcycle that was originally to be called Montjuïc, was eventually called Impala and was one of the greatest successes of the Catalan industry in its entire history, to the point that a second version was manufactured when Montesa was already was in negotiations with Honda.

Leopoldo Milá, a technician who had worked in the shadow of the charismatic Bultó, was in charge of designing a motorcycle that would signify the commercial relaunch of Montesa and he got it right the first time, creating a model that soon became a symbol.

With thousands of Impalas rolling through the streets and through countries around the world, even John Wayne and Steve McQueen had one, the trade war moved to speed and motocross circuits. Catalonia was a very powerful industrial center and dozens of brands filled the streets of a country that was already forgetting the post-war period.

Bultaco and Montesa were joined by names such as Rieju, Ossa and Sanglas. And of course, Derbi who sold his reliable 49 cc Torch, the popular "Paleta", as churros, and who, from the hand of a daring Zamorano named Ángel Nieto, was starting to get a certain prestige in the speed world championship.

In the Garriga documentary, many of the protagonists of that time speak. And their opinions reflect what that was. The break between Permanyer and Bultó had to be very painful and conflictive.

And when listening to people from one side or the other, ill-concealed grudges still come out, and half-voice comments about plans, designs, ideas and projects that do not know who designed and in which drawer they stayed or appeared.

And that enmity was transferred to the competition where the pilots were part of each company, they were almost of the family. They had nothing to do with the professionals of this century, indifferent to history and who can run here today and tomorrow there. The brand was carried in the heart and the protagonists recognize without any problem, even with a point of pride, that they did not speak to each other.

Speed racing was the terrain of conquest and the 24 Hours of Montjuïc the scene of the great battle. The legendary Barcelona race was the highlight and before Italian and Japanese motorcycles dominated the mountain, Montesa and Bultaco achieved victories that were a matter of honor for technicians and riders.

But the battle was not only in Barcelona. Brands and teams met everywhere and the four Africans from Operation Impala, very active pilots, stood out in very diverse competitions. Marsans, head of Montesa's competition department between 1959 and 1967 was the only professional.

The rest were brilliant amateurs. Vernis stood out in regular rallies, Regàs was considered the best driver in bad weather conditions, rain or fog and very good in endurance. And Elizalde was possibly the finest rider of his generation, the Spanish Motocross champion in 1961, winner of the second edition of the 24 Hours in 1956 and also of the first duel between Bultaco and Montesa in Montjuïc in 1959.

They went from competing in Montjuïc to reaching Kilimanjaro and the Ethiopian deserts and vice versa, as if it were the most normal thing in the world. It was in May 1968 in Montjuic piloting a Bultaco TSS 125.

There were years of revival, of daring people, of ambitious industrialists and very capable engineers who designed motorcycles that were a reference in the whole world and also in all specialties, speed, trial, motocross and enduro. The crisis of the 1980s, the Japanese invasion and a certain lack of common leadership destroyed an entire sector from which only Derbi was saved.

Bultaco disappeared and Montesa was absorbed by Honda. They left streets and circuits with more pain than glory because they deserved better luck, but at least we have the memory of those battles between almost legendary characters, between extraordinary riders and legendary motorcycles, whose names all fans have in memory.

Operation Impala allows us to relive that expedition and the ins and outs of a war without quarter. Over the years, different engines have been offered with these cars, some European models were offered with straight six engines, but all of the American cars came equipped with a V8. 500 SL/SLC was introduced for the European market in 1980, becoming the fastest mass production version of Mercedes grand tourer, considerably quicker than all of the versions offered in the USA. Thus, many SLs and SLC with this 5.0-liter V8 ended up as grey imports in the USA, until Mercedes launched a new flagship roadster, 560 SL (5.6-liter V8) specifically for the American market.

Albeit the 560 SL was the most powerful model of this generation, 450 SLC and the later 500 SLC are very sought after today, as they were produced to homologate the C107 for WRC. 2,769 units of 450/500 SLC were produced, and while production cars were detuned compared to their racing counterparts, they still featured aluminum hood, trunk lid and doors, shaving 57 kg off the curb weight.

The success of this weight reduction was proven in 1978 when Mercedes-Benz entered Rally South America with European-spec 450 SLCs and won it. The cars that took on this 30,000 km rally differed very little from the production models. While they were fitted with skid pans, roll cages and additional lights, these coupes retained the production V8s and three speed automatic gearboxes. The winning Mercedes was driven by Timo Mäkinen and co-piloted by Jean Todt, the current president of FIA.

The race version of 450 SLC was later revised, by putting an aluminum block 5.0-liter V8 in it, as well as fitting plastic fender flares to house wider wheels. Mercedes-Benz entered WRC again in 1979, and 450 SLC, piloted by Hannu Mikkola finished in the second position overall. This big coupe with automatic gearbox even propelled him to the first place in the Rallye Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast Rally) in the same year. The racing coupe was rebranded into 500 SLC the following year and managed to take first two podium positions in Bandama Rally in Ivory Coast. After 500 SLC finished 4th overall in 1980 season, the team started to develop a new version of the car for 1981. Unfortunately, company’s management decided to cut the funding, putting the end to C107 rally program.

While the coupe was raced on a rally course, the R107 roadster made several significant appearances on the big screen. Its classic looks, trident star on the grille and convertible roof represented the good life. 450 SL was driven by Sharon Stone in M. Scorsese’s classic “Casino”, another R107 was driven by Richard Gere when he was playing the American Gigolo. The appearances of these roadsters were not limited to big screens either – popular TV show “Dallas” featured an R107 in its intro as well as the episodes.

The R107 roadster with Hollywood appeal was produced for 18 years without major changes, with around 235,000 units produced, so there are plenty to choose from these days. A decent example would probably set you back around 15,000 €, with European market models or ones with more powerful engines costing more. Although the number of SLCs is considerably lower, that doesn’t make them much more expensive. We stop and stare when a long sleek vintage Jaguar rolls by or imagine ourselves blasting through serpentines in a small, nimble Alfa Romeo.

Everyday machines, especially vans, often go under the petrolheads’ radar - there is hardly anyone who enjoys listening to the engine of Ford Transit or ogles at lines of Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. And yet, there have been commercial vehicles with tons of appeal, Citroën HY being one of them. Although lacking in speed and luxury this van makes up for it with geeky engineering and authentic modesty. Nowadays they are loved for their quirky looks, but back then, HY helped to restore post WW II Europe.

Daring design

At first glance, it is hard to pinpoint which historical era Citroën HY belongs to, as it looks like a creature from an alternative automotive universe. When the car debuted in 1947, it revolutionized the world of light commercial vehicles. In fact, this industry was virtually non-existent – most of small transporters were just converted passenger vehicles. Citroën, on the other hand, started from a clean sheet with an aim to construct a practical work mule. Ingenious Citroën designer Flaminio Bertoni, also responsible for Traction Avant, 2CV and the legendary DS, used corrugated metal sheets to develop a sturdy lightweight structure for the van, giving its distinctive look. HY is often lovingly referred to as a ‘salad basket’ (panier à salade) and inspiration for it came from aircraft engineering – German Junkers JU 52 air transporters utilized similar construction.

Pre-1969 HY with round rear arches

Corrugated body is not the only feature setting the Citroën HY apart from other vehicles of the era. In order to maximize the loading volume of it, the engine was at the very front and drove front wheels. HY’s mechanicals derive from Citroën Traction Avant, but the engine is turned around, so the gearbox, unusually, sits in front of it. To conserve interior space, Citroën implemented unibody construction, an innovation even in passenger cars at the time, with a sophisticated independent suspension, as well as rack and pinion steering. As a positive side effect of this space-saving exercise, HY has a low center of gravity and surprisingly good handling. At the time, Citroën’s HY was lightyears ahead of competition. More interestingly, the van’s predecessor was developed even earlier. HY owes many of its R&D to Citroën TUB, a pre-WW II utility vehicle that sported a similar layout, but lacked corrugated steel bodywork.

Rear door opens in three sections – one up, two to the sides

Master of all trades

One of the main engines HY was sold with, 1.9 petrol unit, only had somewhere between 35 and 50 bhp. It may seem laughable today, but the car could carry more than it weighed – with a payload of 1 600 kg, weighing in only 1 200 kg. Its contemporaries Morris J and VW Type 2 could handle only around half of that weight. What is more, the HY was designed so anyone under 180 cm tall could stand upright in the back. Given the practicality of HY’s design, it is not surprising that the van was produced for 33 years, up until 1981, and almost half of a million of them rolled down the assembly line.

Earlier model pickup truck

HY is tall enough to accommodate standing men

The van was originally called H-type, and during the production run, a number of versions were produced, yet HY was by far the most popular. For this reason, most of these vans are referred to as HY, even if it is not always technically correct. Earliest vans were just called H, HP was a pickup truck, HX was the entry level model with lesser capacity and HW could bear the heaviest load. Externally, very minor changes were implemented during the lifespan of HY – most notable were changes of Citroën chevron logo on the grille and switch to single piece windscreen in 1964 or redesigned rear mudguards in 1969.

Pre-1964 HY converted into a food truck

European icon

Most of HYs buzzed around Europe – chicken tax introduced in the 1960s made them hard to import to US. Majority of the vans ended up in France and Benelux countries, not too far from where they were originally manufactured – France and the Netherlands. There was a brief attempt to make right hand drive version across a canal, in England, but hardly any of those HYs are left today.

Initially adored for their practicality, HYs are now loved for their looks – the vans are often converted to stylish food trucks and promotional vehicles. Even Citroën themselves have not forgotten their magnificent work mule – 2011 Tubik concept made clear references to its grandfather HY. Clearly, the appeal of quirky French van has not worn off even 7 decades later.

Citroën Tubik concept

Domantas Mizeikis News May 16, 2018 Conceptos de Gemas https://artsvalua.com/en/blog/post/43-conceptos-de-gemas MLlopis News May 15, 2018 PRÓXIMOS EVENTOS MAYO-JUNIO https://artsvalua.com/en/blog/post/42-proximos-eventos-mayo-junio Classic Club Bàges Classic Motor Club Bàges, Activities May 11, 2018 Thanks to the collaboration of Artsvalua. https://artsvalua.com/en/blog/post/41-thanks-to-the-collaboration-of-artsvalua
Two Murcian students find on YouTube a cross stolen from the cathedral 39 years ago.
The investigation initiated by Juan Manuel Rodríguez and Antonio José Gil has also allowed finding a 19th century necklace
Both belonged to the treasure of the Virgin of the Fuensanta and had been subtracted from the cathedral of Murcia in 1977

Capture of the Belluga cross in the YouTube video that resulted in its location

<span title="En 1977 el robo de varias piezas de gran valor pertenecientes al Museo de la catedral de Murcia - Colection: https://artsvalua.com/en/blog/post/40-triumph-tr3-colection
Introduced in 1955, the TR3 was an evolution of the previous TR2. It was a logical decision from the manufacturer, as the TR2 had proven itself both in racing and on public roads. TR3 shares the overall body shape and 1991 cc engine with its predecessor. The motor puts out a bit under 100 bhp in the newer car, it may not seem much these days, but the journalist from “Car and Driver” called the acceleration of the lightweight TR3 “neck-snapping”. In fact, at the time, TR3 was more powerful than the majority of its competitors, including cars like Porsche 356 or Sunbeam Alpine.

But the engine was not the only aspect where this tiny sports car excelled – the TR3 was the first production car to be fitted with disc brakes. After testing this innovation in 1955 24 Heures du Mans, Triumph introduced it to TR3 buyers in 1956. This cutting edge technology was available in a reasonably priced sports car. TR3 cost around USD 2,600 back in the day, which would be approximately USD 23,000 today. Pricing wise, think of it as Mazda MX-5 or Toyota GT86 of the yesteryear.

TR3 succeeded in achieving numerous racing victories in its class between 1955 and 1959. Most notable performances were winning Liège-Rome-Liège rallies in 1956 and 12 Hours of Sebring in 1957. The car has proven capable on both gravel and tarmac. With relatively low price and high production numbers, around 75,000 were built, they have always been a popular choice for a racing enthusiast. In fact, many TR3s are raced in vintage racing series these days as well.

TR3 is a roadster in its very essence – the car is meant to be driven on sunny days with the top down. While it does have a folding roof, it has no side windows. As a result, the driver has to fit curtain-like contraptions on the sides, which still let the elements in. While there are hardtops and solid side shields on offer, none of them ensure proper protection of the occupants. In exchange for these shortcomings, the car offers a stunning silhouette with the roof down – low slung doors and swooping lines make up an impressive profile of the car.

The model was updated twice during its lifespan, with TR3A, produced from 1957, and TR3B, which was only made in 1962, the last year for this car. Officially, all of the cars were called TR3. After the first face-lift the car featured an upgraded engine on the inside and bigger grille, along with some other changes, on the outside. TR3A was the most popular iteration of the car, with almost 58,000 of them produced. TR3B was made alongside its successor, TR4 which debuted in 1961, as the company worried the customers might not like the drastic changes that came with the new model and stop buying their cars. Externally, TR3B did not differ much from the previous car, but it offered an option of TR4-derived 2.2-liter engine.

There are plenty of TR3s to choose from, but one in good condition will set you back at least EUR 25,000. Pre-1957 cars are quite rare, thus their value is a tad higher, making the popular TR3A perhaps the most rational choice for an enthusiast.

<img up. We were recently witnesses to this phenomenon when talking about air-cooled 911s. Today, a 20-year-old 996 Carrera is probably the cheapest 911 model around, but it's unlikely that will still be the case in another 10 years.

A similar example is the BMW 3 (E30). <span
