The Trabant (satellite, in German) is a low cost automobile produced by the manufacturer VEB Sachsenring Automobilwerke Zwickau, Saxony. It was in his time the vehicle more common in the German Democratic Republic, also being exported to other countries even outside the communist bloc.

Features

His body was of duroplast (a type of plastic created from natural fibers such as cotton) and its motor, two-cylinder two-stroke. Had space for four adults and luggage, it was compact, lightweight and durable.

History

Of the few models of cars that the east germans had access to, the Trabant was the cheapest (about 10,000 frames eastern). To acquire a Trabant you had to sign up on a list and wait up to 10 years or turn to the black market.

Given that you had to wait so long to get a Trabant, the new owners used to be very careful in driving and car maintenance, and usually became very skilled at fixing it. The average lifespan of a Trabant was 28 years. Trabant used, they were often sold at a higher price than the new ones because they were available immediately and were on the waiting list. The name Trabant means in German "satellite"; it is popularly called Trabbi. Were discontinued in 1991.
