In west Africa we can find often decorations in relief in various media, as well as doors, drums, lintels, or in large mortars like this one, with figures of men framed in a scene of daily life. This beautiful large mortar of africa, shows us a scene in relief that we can continue without interruption, given that the figures, with great movement, appear intertwined with each other, and dance united through a tree or a house. The inhabitants of the village, may be danced in commemoration of a ceremonial ritual for the earth to be fertile, given that the mortar is a tool to be used with food or make ointments extracted from the earth. The artist takes advantage of all the space decorative, showing the perspective through a white background, contrasted with the dark figures in relief. Both the top and on the bottom we can see incisions in a triangular shape.
