History
In September of 1953, the US importer of Daimler-Benz, Maximilian Hoffman, gave ideas to improve the business of US Wanted to be two different models of sports cars will complement the range up to now conservative models of Mercedes-Benz. For the design of a true sports car offered as a base coupe 300 SL , which in the united states, by winning the Carrera Panamericana had the attention of the americans. In addition to this you would also have to be a sports tourism which would offer the everyday practicality. Hoffman received the promise of the February 6, 1954 a study of these vehicles would be presented in New York in the "International Auto show". Despite the short development of 5 months of these vehicles, the press loved. The development of the 300 SL had made a lot of progress, so that the production began in August 1954. The 190 SL was revised in march 1955 at the Geneva Auto Salon Motor show. The series production began two months later in the Sindelfingen plant , which already produced the 300SL. The speed of 190 km / h could not be performed. In practice, the maximum speed was 170 km / h.

In addition to the visual demands, the engineers also thought about the functionality. Fitted the front wings and rear horizontal that protected the flanks of the vehicle from the dirt.
