At the end of the NINETEENTH century emerge in Europe's architectural trends that break with the traditional criteria and are seeking new ways of building with a view to the XX century, which give great importance to aesthetics. This movement is a consequence of the industrial Revolution, that has been taking root in various countries, and the advances derived from it, such as electricity, the railroad and the steam engine, that have changed the whole way of living of the population and have led to a growth of cities, which have been established in industries that oversee a growing number of bourgeois. Modernism is, therefore, a style of urban and bourgeois.
Modernism rejects the style unattractive industrial architecture of the first half of the NINETEENTH century and developed new architectural concepts based on Nature, which consist in the materials of construction are used, in the forms of buildings and on the figures of its facades. The architects and their sculptors placed on the exterior of buildings, birds, butterflies, leaves, and flowers as decorative elements, either as figures attached to, or as an ornament of stone or ceramic. Also placed figures of larger size, animals, fabulous or people, and in the cornices elements of ceramic color. The windows and balconies have wrought iron railings that are carved artistically and contain motifs inspired by Nature.
The development of modernism is promoted in Catalonia by the bourgeoisie, who feels Catalan and is cultured and sensitive to the art. This bourgeoisie sees in this new architecture the way to satisfy their craving for modernization, to express their Catalan identity, and highlight discreetly their wealth and distinction.
There were more than 100 architects who made buildings of Catalan modernist style. Notable among them about all three: Antoni Gaudí, Lluís Domènech i Montaner and Josep Puig i Cadafalch.
This type of parts were used to enhance and finish off with finesse even though they were strong and resilient for the type of material, in this case bronze.
