More info

The Austin 10 is a small car that was produced by the Austin Motor Company . It was released in 1932 and was the best selling car of Austin in 1930 and continued in production, with upgrades, until 1947. Fit between the "baby" Austin 7 which had been introduced in 1922 and the Austin 12 hp which had been updated in 1931.

The design of the car was conservative with a body of sheet steel, built on a chassis reinforced cross. The chassis was purchased and was designed to give a reduced height of the car by immersion by 2.75 inches (70 mm) between the axles. The 1125-cc four-cylinder side valve engine produces 21 horsepower of braking (16 kW) drove the rear wheels through a gearbox four-speed and a drive shaft which is open to a rear axle live. The suspension was by coil elliptical around and the brakes were operated by cable. The electrical system was 6 volt. For the first year only, a saloon of four doors was made in two versions. The cost of £ 155 basic model and was able to reach 55 miles per hour (89 km / h) with an economy of 34 mpg, quickly followed by the sunshine or De Luxe-with the opening of the leather upholstery ceiling and at £ 168.

1933 saw the saloons joined by a two-seater convertible or "Open Road" tourer, a "Colwyn" cabriolet and a van. A sports model, the 65 miles per hour (105 km / h), 30-horsepower, brake (22 kW) "Ripley" joined the range in 1934. Mechanical upgrades for 1934 included a chassis stronger, synchronized in the two-speed and electric 12-volt.

The style change came for the first time in late 1934 with a change to the radiator when the surround fairing clad, was replaced by one painted in body colour and gave a slight slope. Synchromesh in second gear and "traffic light" type indicators were standardized. The lounge was given the name "Lichfield" and got a boot outstanding that contained the spare wheel.

A new body style was added in 1936, with the light six (three windows on each side, with one behind the rear door) "Sherbourne" but the big change came in 1937 with the almost streamlined "Cambridge" saloon and cabriolet "Conway". Other changes included Girling brake rod, 16-inch, wheels steel disc, replaced the cables and 18-inch more space for the passengers by moving the front of the engine by 4 inches (100 mm). The maximum speed rose to 60 miles per hour (97 km / h). These changes do not appear in the auto open, that does not include the sports of Ripley, until 1938 when all cars also has won a cylinder head of aluminum in the engine.

A car almost new and was launched in 1939 with bodywork that incorporates the word in order to give a structure semi-unitary. The car was completely redesigned by the argentinean born Dick Burzi who had joined Austin from Lancia in 1929. The hood was hinged at the rear, replacing the type of side-opening in the old car and the radiator grille is rounded and there was no cabriolet. Despite the outbreak of the Second World War, production of the Austin 10 continued in large numbers, there were no tourers but there was a pick-up. In total during the war, 53,000 of the sedans, pick-ups and vans, the last two not official known as "Tillies" , were made.

With peace in 1945 a change was made immediately to the production of civil, but due to the crisis of post-war financial of the cars were almost all exported, with the one that came for the first time in the united States in July of 1945. In September 1945, the cars first produced after the end of the Second World War to arrive in Switzerland were two of the 10 Austin exported from England.

The car continued in production as a saloon only until October 1947 to be replaced by the A40 . The truck also reappeared after the war with a slightly larger 1237-cc engine.
