The Fiat Barchetta (pronounced "bar-that-ta") is an automotive turismo convertible two-seater produced by the Italian manufacturer Fiat from 1995 to 2005 (with a break in production between may 2002 and 2004). "Barchetta" in Italian means 'small boat'.

Interior design of the Fiat Barchetta.

The Barchetta was developed between 1990 and 1994 under the project name Spider 176 Type B.3 The basic design of the Barchetta came out of Andreas Zapatinas4 inspired by the Ferrari 166 MM, remaining at the head of the project until 1993, when he was appointed Chief designer of Alfa Romeo. Since then the design passed into the hands of Alessandro Cavazza under the supervision of Peter Barrett Davis in the Centro Stile Fiat, bringing the vehicle finally to production in 1995. The interior was built from the first concept spider proposed by Peter Davis and Bertolusso Joseph.

Technical characteristics

Engine 1.747 cc from the Fiat Barchetta.

The car was designed from the chassis of the Fiat Punto I, being trimmed and fitted with a engine 16V DOHC with 1.747 cc, and variable camshaft technology present for the first time in a model of Fiat. The engine develops 130 HP at 6300 revolutions per minute, the same what would you share with other models of Fiat, as the Coupe version and the HGT of the Point (produced in 1999). The Barchetta weighs 1.056 kg without air conditioning and can accelerate according to the official data from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 190 km/h (118 mph).6

Series production

The body of the vehicle and its structure is soldered in the factory ILCAS in the region of Sparone Canavese, and final assembly is carried out in the plant of Chivasso by Carrozzeria Maggiora. After the bankruptcy of Maggiora in 2002, Fiat relocated production of the Barchetta to the plant of Fiat Mirafiori and resumed production two years later.7 The greater part of the production of the Barchetta was limited to vehicles with a steering wheel to the left, only in the United Kingdom and Japan were marketed models with steering wheel to the right. The first test model manufactured was assembled in September of 1994 (chassis 00000099) and the true series production began at the end of the month of march 1995. The last unit manufactured rolled out of the factory of Mirafiori, in June 2005, when it finally ceased production.
