The first motorcycle Zündapp was the model Z22 in 1921. This was the Motorrad für Jedermann ("motorcycle for everyone"), a simple design and reliable that is produced in large series. The history of Zündapp motorcycles heavy began in 1933 with the series K. The "K" refers to the type of transmission that use these models, Kardanantrieb , meaning transmission shaft closed with two universal joints . Zündapp introduced the sump is closed (then a novelty). The series encompassed models from 200 to 800 cc displacement and was a great success, increasing the market share of Zündapp in Germany from 5% in 1931 to 18% in 1937.

The Zündapp KS600, first released in 1938, had an engine of double cylinder opposed horizontal 28 hp (21 kW) with valves at the top displacing 597 cc (36.4 cu in). The KS600 is often combined with a sidecar Steib, the BW38 (Beiwagen 1938). The BW38, fitted with the body of sidecar B1 (boot no. No. 1) was produced between 1938 and 1941 and supplied exclusively to the Wehrmacht . While the KS600 was discontinued and he was eventually replaced by the KS750 specially designed, its engine was the only remnant to live beyond the destruction of the war. When Zündapp returned to motorcycle production at the end of the 1940s, chose to reuse the engine of the KS600 to feed the KS601 with a few modifications.

The Zündapp K800 had a unit-construction , four-engine planes with transmission axis (a layout adopted by Honda for the Gold Wing in 1974) and were the only machines of 4 cylinders used by the German armed forces in the Second World War.

From 1931 Ferdinand Porsche and Zündapp developed the prototype type 12 Auto für Jedermann ("car for everyone"), that was the first time that we used the name of Volkswagen . Porsche preferred the engine flat 4-cylinder engine, but Zündapp used a radial engine 5-cylinder, water-cooled. In 1932, ran three prototypes. The three cars were lost during the war, the last in a bombing raid, 1945, in Stuttgart .

From 1936 to 1938, Zündapp produced the model KKS500. This was the first Zündapp with change of foot, and built 170 examples. At the beginning of 1940, Zündapp produced more than 18,000 units of the Zündapp KS 750 . This is a suit in a sidecar with a wheel-side driven and a differential lock , supplied to the German Wehrmacht.

Zündapp also made engines for planes, including the 9-092 , which was used in light aircraft, including the aircraft Brunswick LF-1 Zaunkönig (1942) ab initio .

Post-war: 1945-84

After the Second World War, the company made the transition to smaller machines, especially the scooter " Beautiful ", which was a machine relatively heavy for its type. In 1951 Zündapp released the last of its models of heavy motorcycle, but one of his most famous: the KS601 (the "green elephant") with an engine 598 cc two-cylinder. From 1957 to 1958 the company also produced the microcar Zündapp Janus .

In 1958 the company moved from Nuremberg to Munich . Subsequently, the company developed several new models smaller, discontinued the development of four-stroke engines and only produced models of two times . Zündapp experienced some success in motor sports with the american rider Dave Ekins gaining an overall victory in the Greenhorn Enduro, 1967 aboard a Zündapp 100cc, defeating competitors on motorcycles, much larger. The pilot belgian André Malherbe rode a Zündapp to win the european championships of motocross 125 cc in 1973 and again in 1974. Initially, the scooters and mopeds from Zündapp sold well, but later sales declined and in 1984 the company went out of business. and closed.

After the bankruptcy, the entire production line and intellectual properties were bought by Xunda Motor Co., Tianjin , China. Produced small motorcycles Zündapp from 1987 until the early nineties. Zündapp is still in the business, but manufactures motorcycles and mopeds electric with base from Honda.

Zündapp also had a technical collaboration with Royal Enfield (India) to build mopeds and motorcycles. A factory dedicated to it was built in Ranipet near Chennai at the beginning of the decade of 1980 for the manufacture of small motorcycles and light two-stroke that would be offered along with its flagship Royal Enfield Bullet . Enfield has launched two motorcycles of 50 cc first, the Silver Plus step-by-step and the motorcycle Explorer 3-speed. Later, 175 cc Enfield Fury (based on Zündapp KS175) was introduced as a motorcycle with high performance. I had a gearbox of 5 speeds, a disc brake Brembo hydraulic cylinder cylinder hard chrome without sleeves, all were the first on a motorcycle in that country.
