These unstoppable vehicles have become synonymous with versatility and adventure. Over more than 50 years, Jeep has evolved more in the sense of a practical than aesthetic, without losing the rough appearance of always. The united states reached a great success with the development of the Jeep, the vehicle most essential of the Second World War, which came to be produced by the hundreds of thousands and now, already modernized, is still of great appeal to its users.
The first vehicle is the predecessor of the Jeep, because with its characteristics, it was the “beater bellies”, built by the military Howe and Wiley in 1937, on a rack, and motor Austin four-cylinder. Large wheels gave effectiveness on the ground plane; however, their discomfort and reduced ability to navigate around obstacles with ease, will a reduction of their effectiveness.
In early 1939, the army requested the American Bantam Car Company that manufacturer in just two months a prototype, with the promise of buying another 70 more vehicles, between a quarter of a ton and 595 kilograms of weight. Despite the poor economic conditions of this company, its president, F. H. Fenn, hired Karl Probst who, working to forced marches, designed and built the vehicle using one axis of Studebaker and the greater number of parts of Bantam. In September of the same year, the vehicle was ready. After subjecting him to hard tests by the military, there were its faults and benefits for 5,000 kilometers. This test was witnessed by some representatives of Willys Overland and the Ford Motor Company, who two months later designed their own prototypes. However, for those dates, Bantam was making an order of 1,500 units.
The three pilots were very similar, but their performance differed and each had aspects that led to its rivals. The Bantam surpassed the Ford and the Willys in the consumption of fuel and brakes. The Ford had a better transmission and a better arrangement of the brake lever, in addition to being much more comfortable. The prototype Willys offered a better performance motor: 2.2 liters and 60 HP against the 2.0-liter Ford and a 1.8-liter, the Bantam, both with 46 HP. The weight of 970 kg, as requested by the army, and never reached, finally was 1,088 kg for the Willys.
In 1941, the three manufacturers produced vehicles known as Jeeps. However, due to internal policies of the Department of Defense, during the Second World War was manufactured only models of Willys and Ford, with some variants in single and double traction. After a standardization to avoid differences, and to reduce costs, were created the MB Willys, and the GWP of Ford, known as the M38.
At the end of the war, Willys and Ford had produced 586,000 Jeeps M38. The last Jeep to the great war it was manufactured in August of 1945, just when the conflict ended. At the end of that year, Willys offered the civil version of the Jeep, known as the CJ2A. In 1946 appeared a guayín Jeep based on the same chassis, which sold more than 200,000 units until 1948. Similarly, there was the Jeepster, a model equipped like a car, with a body more sporty and interior more pleasant. It is reproduced 10,400 units from 1948 to 1951.
