The Porsche 944 is a sports car built by the German manufacturer Porsche from 1982 to 1991. It was conceived as a replacement to the Porsche 924, being the new base model of the entry of the mark, although 924 production continued through 1988. The 944 was intended to stay the sale until well into the 1990s but major revisions planned for the 944 S2 were finally embodied in the new model 968, his successor. History and overview of models

The Porsche 924 was originally a joint project of VW-Porsche to develop a new model of Volkswagen or Audi. The joint venture VW-Porsche, which was formed with the intention of selling the 914, I had planned that this model would not have the good acceptance that has had the 356. However, the rate of sales was enough to not be ignored by VW so it was agreed that Porsche would develop a new model to be marketed as a VW or Audi. In 1972, the substitute for the version of Volkswagen of the 914, code EA-425 began development.
This model should use as many VW parts as possible but with the appearance similar to the Porsche 928 as the car was going to be sold probably as an Audi according to the agreement of marketing of Volkswagen-Audi-Porsche. Although testing had already begun in the spring of 1974 Volkswagen decided to cancel the program due to the costs of production, as well as the feeling that would be in direct competition with the recently released Volkswagen Scirocco that filled the hollow as cupe and sporty enough. The project almost disappears when the joint venture broke up and, due to the oil crisis of 1973-1974, VW withdrew the car definitely of all of the future plans of the company.

At Porsche, however, were convinced of its potential success and the dealers of the brand they wanted desperately a model "economic" that provides a large volume of sales. So it was that Porsche bought the project for more than $ 40 million in 1975 and finished its development, resulting in the model 924. In 1989 appears the version 944S2, which was a version of the 944S of 16V, with the body design of the turbo and its capacity increased up to 3L. In 1986 Porsche introduced the 944 Turbo, known internally as the 951 (952 for the driving units on the right). This had a turbo and intercooler in the initial version standard offered 220CV to 6000 rpm, and its price at the end of 1985 was around us $ 60,000.
