Packard was founded by James Ward Packard , his brother William and their partner George Lewis Weiss, in the city of Warren, Ohio , where they built 400 cars Packard factory on Dana Street Northeast, from 1899 to 1903. A mechanical engineer, James Packard believed that they could build a car without horses better than cars Winton owned by Weiss, an important shareholder of Winton, after Packard complained to Alexander Winton and offered suggestions for improvement, which were ignored. The first car of Packard was built in Warren, Ohio , on November 6, 1899.
Henry Bourne Joy , a member of one of the oldest families and richest of Detroit , bought a Packard. Impressed by its reliability he visited the Packards and soon enlisted a group of investors including Truman Handy Newberry and Russell A. Alger, Jr. On October 2, 1902, this group refinanced and renamed the Car Company of New York, and Ohio as Packard Motor Car Company, with James Packard as president. Alger later served as vice-president. Packard moved its operations to Detroit soon after and Joy became general manager (and later chairman of the board). A Packard original, supposedly the first manufactured, was donated by a grateful James Packard to his alma mater , the University of Lehigh , and is preserved there in the Lab of Packard. Another is on display in the Museum Packard in Warren, Ohio.
At the beginning, all the Packard had an engine of a single cylinder until 1903. The Packard vehicles introduced innovations, including the wheel modern and, years later, the first 12-cylinder engine production, adapted from the development of the Liberty L-12 , and air-conditioning in a passenger car. Packard produced its series of models "Twin Six" cars 12-cylinder from 1915 to 1923.
Packard continued to be the main luxury automobile, despite the fact that the majority of cars being built were the ranges of the models 120 and Super Eight . With the hope to catch even more of the market, Packard decided issue the Packard 115C in 1937, which worked with the first six-cylinder engine of Packard from the cars of the Fifth Series in 1928. The decision to introduce the "Packard Six", with a price tag of around $ 1200, arrived in time for the recession of 1938. This model is also called Packards as something less exclusive than they had been in the mind of the public and, in the long run, hurt the reputation of Packard to build some of the best luxury cars in the united States. The Six, redesignated 110 in 1940-41, continued for three years after the war.
