Chronology

Predecessor

Jaguar E-Type 1

Successor

not replaced, Jaguar XJ 6

The Jaguar Mark 2 is a medium-sized saloon car built from late 1959 to 1967 by the Jaguar company in Coventry, England. During the last 12 months before announcement of the XJ6 they were re-labelled Jaguar 240 and Jaguar 340. The previous Jaguar 2.4 and 3.4 models made between 1955 and 1959 have been identified as Mark 1 Jaguars since Jaguar produced this model of the mark 2.

Until the XJ , salons of post-war Jaguar are indicated by roman numerals (e.g. Mark VII , Mark VIII ) while the Mark 2 used Arabic numerals , denoted on the rear of the car as "MK 2".

The motor XK

Adhering to Sir William Lyons maxim "of" grace, pace and space ", the Mark 2 was a saloon fast and capable. Came with a 120 BHP (89 kW; 120 PS) 2.483 cubic centimetres (152 cu in), 210 BHP (160 kW; 210 PS) 3.442 cubic centimetres (210 cu in) or 220 BHP (160 kW; 220 PS) 3781 cc (231 cu in) engine Jaguar XK . The 3.8 is similar to the unit used in the 3.8 E-Type (called XKE in the USA) , which has the same block, crankshaft, connecting rods and pistons of connection, but different input manifold and carburation (two of THEIR front three in the E-Type in Europe) and therefore 30 BHP (22 kW) less. The head of the six-cylinder engine in the Mark 2 had curved ports compared to the ports row of the configuration of the E-Type. The 3.4-and 3.8-litre cars were equipped with carburetors double YOUR HD6 and the 2.4 with carbs dual Solex.

Administration

In comparison with the mark 1 , appearance of the car transformed by an increase of 18% in the area of the glass of the cockpit that improves visibility. The car was re-engineered above the waistline, pillars of the front thin allow a windshield and wider rear window almost wrapped around the side windows are now extended with the Jaguar D-shape family above the back door, and frames are fully chromed for all the side windows . The radiator grille was modified and lamps side larger, the tail and fog repositioned. Within a new heating system was fitted and channeled to the rear compartment (although it is still notoriously ineffective). There was a layout improved tool which became standard for all cars of Jaguar until the XJ series II of 1973.

Mechanical changes

The geometry of the front suspension was scheduled again to lift the centre of balance and the rear was expanded. Disc brakes in the four wheels were now standard. Power steering, automatic transmission with overdrive, or could be equipped with an additional cost. The 3.8-litre was supplied fitted with a limited slip differential.

The Mark 2 was more than 100 kg heavier than the 2,4 / 3,4 cars.

Daimler 2.5 V8 and V8-250

Main article: Daimler 250

A derivative of luxury popular equipped with 142 bhp's own Daimler (106 kW; 144 PS) 2 ½ litre V8 sold well 1962-67, including Daimler 2.5 V8 . At the end of 1967 was re-labeled V8-250 to match Jaguar 240. In addition to being much more powerful than the XK6 2.4-liter engine Daimler more modern was lighter of about 150 pounds (68 kg) and also shorter which reduced the mass over the front wheels and reduced understeer in hard cornering.

These cars were recognisable by the characteristic ribbed corrugated Daimler incorporated in the radiator grille, chromed frame and rear cover of the lamp of the registration, the smoothness and the sound of its V8 engine. It gave them a different exterior and interior luxury.

240 and 340

In September 1967 the mark 2 cars were re-labelled 240 and 340. The 3.8-liter engine has been dropped. Were provisional models to fill the gap until the introduction of the XJ6 in September of 1968. The 340 was discontinued on the introduction of the XJ6 but the 240 continued as an economic model reasonable until April 1969. Its price of £ 1.364 was only £ 20 more than the first 2.4 in 1956.

Output of the motor 240 is increased from 120 BHP (89 kW; 120 PS) @ 5750 rpm to 133 BHP (99 kW; 135 PS) @ 5500 rpm and a torque is increased. Now he had a head-type right cylinder ports and carburetors dual HS6 SU with a new intake manifold. The automatic transmission was upgraded to a range of actuation dual Borg-Warner 35. Power steering by Marles Varamatic was now available in the 340. Service intervals were increased from 2,000 miles to 3,000 miles. There was a slight reshaping of the rear bodywork and bumper thinner and over-riders were fitted. For the first time the model 2.4-liter could exceed 100 kilometers per hour, resulting in a resurgence of sales lightweight.

The economies of the new models 240 and 340 came at a cost - the leather upholstery was replaced with material similar to the leather Ambla and tufted carpet was used on the floor, though both had been introduced on the Mark 2 a year earlier. Other changes include the replacement of the front fog lights with vents and circular fog lamps that are optional for the Uk market. The sale price was reduced to compete with the Rover 2000 TC .

Performance

A car's 3.4-litre with automatic transmission tested by the magazine Motor in 1961 had a top speed of 119,9 mph (193,0 km / h) and can accelerate from 0-60 mph (97 km / h) 11.9 seconds. Fuel consumption touring 19.0 miles per imperial gallon (14.9 L/100 km; increase of 15.8 mpg-Us) was recorded. The test car cost £ 1951 taxes of £ 614 including.

A car of the 3.8-liter engine of 220 HP is able to accelerate from 0-60 mph (97 km / h) in 8.5 seconds and can reach a top speed of 125 mph (201 km / h).

Motorsport

The Mark 2 was raced successfully in the European Championship Touring car .

Influence on jaguars modern

Lines of the mark 2 body, derived from the mark 1, and overall layout proved sufficiently popular over time to provide a source of inspiration for the Jaguar S-Type introduced in 1999.

Representation in the media

The Mark 2 gained a reputation as a capable car among criminals and police alike, the model 3.8-liter is particularly fast with its 220 BHP (164 kW) engine driving the car from 0-60 mph (97 km / h) in 8.5 seconds and to a top speed of 125 mph (201 km / h), with space enough for five adults. Popular as getaway cars, but were also employed by the police to patrol british motorways .

The Mark 2 is also well known as the car driven by fictional TV detective Inspector Morse played by John Thaw , the car of Morse was the version with engine 2.4 L, steel wheels and Everflex vinyl roof. In November 2005, the car used in the television series sold for over £ 100,000 following a total ground-up rebuild (prior to this, in his state-commissioned again in 2002 after coming out of storage, that it had made £ 53,000 at auction - £ 45,000 more than an equivalent without the history).  In the original novels by Colin Dexter , Morse had driven a Lancia but Thaw insisted on his character driving a british car in the television series.

In the british film 1987 Withnail and I , a trademark light gray color 2 in a very bad state serves as the main transportation for the trip disastrous to the main characters of the same name 'for the English countryside.
